Beis Midrash Buzz

Beis Midrash
Hebrew Theological College's Beis Midrash program continues to grow with our dynamic and energetic Rosh HaYeshiva, Rabbi Avraham Friedman.  Our students continue their extensive Torah study hearing shuirim from their Rabbeim, our Rosh HaYeshiva, Rabbi Gedalia Dov Schwartz, Av Beis Din of the CRC and Rabbi Shmuel Feurst, Dayan of Agudath Israel.  After Pesach our Beis Midrash will continue learning Bava Metzia, and we wish mazal tov to the many students who will be finishing the masechta.

Our Dean, Rabbi Michael Myers, guides our accredited college program to assist every student in maximizing his college studies in addition to his Torah studies.  Our Bachelor of Arts degree with Majors in Judaic Studies, Accounting, Business, and Psychology, affords the opportunity to advance in these highly popular areas and enter into the finest graduate programs in the country.  Pre-Med and Pre-Law studies are also available.

Aside from intense learning and a rigorous college schedule, our students particpate in various extra-curricular programs.  Throughout the year, Beis Midrash students enjoy shabbatonim with Rabbeim and Bellows Kollel members.  New this year, our Beis Midrash held a Shabbaton in St. Louis with the help of HTC Almunus Rabbi Menachem Kirshner, interacting with the local community.  Recently, the students enjoyed a special shabbaton at the home of Rabbi and Mrs. Avraham Friedman, participating in the first ever Beis Midrash Yeshiva Bowl.

With a renewed ruach, there is a new sense of camaraderie, making the Beis Midrash an attractive place to learn Torah and seek an accredited college degree.

Bellows Kollel Teams up with Hillel Torah

Hillel Torah students studying with Bellows Kollel membersTwice a week, eighth graders at neighboring Hillel Torah North Suburban Day School trek across the field to join members of our Bellows Kollel in tackling the intricacies of Bava Metzia.  The invigorating study session is part of a nationwide Torah Umesorah mentoring program.

In addition to providing the eighth-graders with a valuable introduction to our vibrant Beis Midrash, the students are also exposed to some of our most outstanding young scholars.  The Kollel members embrace their roles as mentors, while carefully honing their teaching skills and leaving a warm, positive feeling with their young talmidim.

In the past, many Hillel Torah participants in the program have chosen to continue their education at Fasman Yeshiva High School.  Those students enter our yeshiva as already familiar faces in our Beis Midrash.

Hebrew Theological College Establishes a Cooperative Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program with North Park University

Representatives of NPU with representatives of HTC This new cooperative program allows students to take all nursing prerequisites on the Blitstein Institute campus and complete their nursing education at North Park University.  Nursing students can continue to reside at the Blitstein Institute student residence, avail themselves of all student services and activities, and continue Limudei Kodesh.  Students may opt to complete both the Bachelor of Arts from HTC and the Bachelor of Science in Nursing from North Park University in the same time period. North Park University agreed to make full allowances for Shabbos and Yom Tov observance, and has rearranged clinical hours to accommodate early Fridays and Erev Yom Tov schedules.

This is the first of several strategic affiliations being developed between HTC and local universities for our Beis Midrash and our Blitstein Institute students interested in careers in Health Sciences.

Fasman Yeshiva Expresses Hakoras HaTov to Mr. Sheldon Schaffel

Dr. David Schusteff

FYHS welcomes Dr. David Schusteff as FYHS Associate Principal for General Studies.  Dr. Schusteff opted for early retirement from the Niles Township High Schools District 219 in 2004 after 33 years of distinguished service.  During his last ten years in District 219 he served as Principal of Niles North High School for five years and as Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources for five years. His extensive experience in curriculum, faculty development and overall academic leadership will certainly serve the Yeshiva well.

Dr. Schusteff was born in West Rogers Park and grew up in Highland Park.  He graduated from Deerfield High School and holds degrees from Illinois State University (B.S. Partnering To Ensure Our Children's Future

This past November, Hebrew Theological College proudly celebrated its 86th Anniversary Banquet.   At this community-wide event, the Yeshiva had the opportunity to honor and thank several distinguished individuals who play a vital role in our continuing success.

Rabbi and Mrs. Yaakov RajchenbachThis year's honorees included Rabbi Yaakov and Mrs. Judy Rajchenbach, truly special and integral members of our community.  Rabbi and Mrs. Rajchenbach have long been at the forefront of global yiddishkeit by strengthening Torah and other Jewish causes throughout the world.  In accepting the award, Rabbi Rajchenbach, a Yeshiva alumnus and  visionary communal leader, spoke of the invaluable role that HTC continues to play in educating the future leaders of the world's Torah community.  Their continuing involvement with the Yeshiva is a blessing and an honor.

Rabbi Chaim Twerski

The Marbitz Torah Award was given to Harav Chaim Twerski, a communal Rav and Rebbi in our Yeshiva for the past twenty-six years.  His devotion to Torah and passion for teaching have allowed him to positively impact hundreds of talmidim, helping our Yeshiva and its students attain greater heights.  Currently Rabbi Twerski is teaching the Semicha Shiur, preparing talmidim for their future in the Rabbinate.  May Rabbi Twerski continue on his lifelong endeavor,
להגדיל תורה ולהאדירה.

Dr. Jerry Garden with son-in-law David Porush, President of Alumni AssociationWe were also proud to present the Distinguished Alumnus Award to Dr. Jerry Garden who, as an accomplished professional, a devoted supporter of the community, and a true role-model, has set a high standard for what our talmidim can strive to become.  Dr. Garden has always taken a Torah-inspired approach to his medical practice, making genuine concern and care an integral part of his treatment.

28th Annual Melave Malka & Rabbi Davis Semicha Scholarship

Srully Williger singing with Dov Robinson and David PorushThe 28th Annual Melave Malka of Hebrew Theological College was held on January 24th in conjunction with Yeshiva Parents and the HTC Alumni Association, and featured famous singer Srully Williger.  This wonderful evening of song and inspiration was held as a benefit for the Sam and Nina Bellows Kollel, and was also an expression of appreciation to the Yeshiva's Rabbeim.  In addition to a sumptuous buffet-style gourmet spread, guests were treated to the spiritually uplifting nigunim of one of Jewish music's most recognized voices.  Srully Williger entertained the overflow crowd with his uniquely energetic style, mixing his most beautiful, slow nigunim with several faster tunes which inspired many Yeshiva students and rabbeim in attendance to break out into an impromptu dance circle.

Semicha Scholorship recipient Yaakov Weiner with Rabbi Dr. Jerold IsenbergThe yeshiva was proud to announce the recipient of the Rabbi Herman Davis Memorial Semicha ScholarshipThis year's winner was Yaakov Weiner of Chicago, who accepted the award from HTC Chancellor Rabbi Dr. Jerold Isenberg.  Congratulations and hatzlacha to Yaakov, as he continues his studies in our Beis Midrash.
